Porch Light is always on

OK, before diving into today’s post let’s get something out on the table right now.  I’m a HUGE antique/stuff/pretty junk/anything old collector …. There — I feel better.  Now onto today’s blog post featuring Porch Light.

Oh btw, my work desk just happens to be from Porch Light — go figure.

Here is what Porch Light’s Proprietess, Kate Shaw has to say about her treasure trove of a shop:

“Porch Light began in 2000 when my sister Keiran opened her store in Oakland California.  At the time, I was a commercial insurance underwriter (I know….crazy right?), but would go antiquing on the weekends to find vintage treasures to send to her store.  I quickly realized that this was a lot more fun and fulfilling, and that Des Moines could use a fun store like Porch Light! So, in 2003, I opened Porch Light (Two) in Historic Valley Junction, WDM.  This past October I moved my store to the East Village on the corner of East 6th and Grand. I am loving my new space and being a part of such an amazing business community.

My love for all things old began early when my parents would take us to garage sales, antique shows, and flea markets. I have often been told that a visit to Porch Light is like a walk back in time.  I am always hearing things like ‘this reminds me of my grandmother’s house or ‘I received this such and such as a wedding gift back in the 50′s’ or ‘I remember having this growing up’. I love that my store reminds people of good times gone by. A time when life seemed much simpler and more carefee. A time when things were made with thought and purpose, not to mention, made to last.   At Porch Light, we carry an eclectic mix of vintage and vintage ‘inspired’ items including furniture, household accessories, linens, pottery, jewelry, glassware, stationery, architectural items, candles, books, baby stuff….the list goes on.

Stop in and get inspired on recycling the past!”

Open Mon. 11-5, Tues. – Fri. 11-6, Sat. 10-5 and Sun. 12-4
